How to Organize Your Pantry

Organized Pantry with Food Items Stored in Glass ContainersKeeping an organized pantry in your Hoover rental home could be a very daunting task for some. If you want to keep things fresh and new for as long as possible, you have to know where they are, and where they’re supposed to be. To make sure that your food supply is fresh and easy to access, listen to these simple pantry organization tips.

1. Create a System

Most people approach pantry organization with a relatively simple system: grouping similar items together. There are other ways to organize a pantry, though. You might want to take items you often use together and group them together, like pasta noodles, and sauce or baking essentials. But, you can go with different options for grouping your pantry.

If you have items that are frequently used, that could be reason enough to also group them up in easy-to-reach-spots. Another way of doing it is to set up zone or stations inside your pantry, stashing food items according to function or time of day when they’re usually used. Examples of this might be a coffee station, a bin with after-school snacks, or a shelf for breakfast. Nevertheless, the way you set your system up should be a reflection of your daily routines when using the pantry.

2. Rotate Your Storage

An overlooked approach to pantry organization is a regular rotation of food items. What usually happens is that those food items start to pile up and the older ones get pushed to the back and forgotten. To avoid having to discard expired food, put a first-in, first-out system for your pantry. When restocking each shelf, place new items behind older items. Go through your items every now and then so that you can check the expiration dates and segregate the ones that are already expired. By doing this, you’re making sure that the items in your pantry are constantly fresh.

3. Choose Proper Storage Containers

Your containers don’t have to be expensive. Just make sure that each item in your pantry is stored and sorted out properly. Other items will not be like canned food. They will have their own packaging, and will most likely need to be transferred to an airtight container to stay fresh.

To ensure long-term freshness, decant flour and other grain-based food items by taking them out of the bags they come in and place them in glass or plastic containers with tight-fitting lids. The original bags of flour, cake mix, or other similar items could be possible hiding places for insect eggs or other problems. This is why it’s wise to transfer them to another container. The last thing you want is a pantry infested with bugs.

There are a few essential things to remember when grouping your pantry items. Certain foods should not be stored closely with others. For example, onions and potatoes. If you have both in your pantry, make sure to separate them. If you don’t, the onions’ strong odor can permeate the potatoes and cause them to spoil faster.

Finally, look for storage containers that not only fit snugly in your shelves but ones that give you easy access to the contents. Mason jars are usually used for storing rice. But, because of its narrow mouth, scooping the rice becomes quite difficult. Pick containers that can be labeled, so that you don’t get confused with what’s inside, as well as to keep track of the content’s expiration date. In this case, make use of removable labels for easy updating of each container.

4. Size Matters

Finally, in your attempt to organize your pantry, while you make space for smaller items like spice jars, don’t forget to leave room for bigger items, as well. You can make use of smaller shelving or trays to keep similar items or separate different items. If possible, create some taller spaces for cereal boxes, bottles, or other tall or oddly-shaped items.

Ultimately, with a bit of effort and a whole bunch of tips, you can transform your ordinary pantry into one that’s organized and designed to keep the food supply fresh!
